Accommodation for refugees
Prospective and existing accommodation for refugees in Berlin have become particularly vulnerable over the course of the last years
Even though racist mobilisation on the streets of Berlin has decreased since its peak in 2014 and 2015, there is still a real threat of anti-refugee and racist sentiment, extreme right-wing mobilisation and attacks on asylum seekers and their accommodation.
These threats are also directed at staff in the accommodations as well as at supporters of refugees. The highly charged discussions surrounding the topic as well as potential reservations in direct neighbourhoods only exacerbate the situation.
All these factors must be addressed and confronted on location. The MBR has been supporting the funding bodies and sponsors of these accommodations, as well as the responsible administrative structures, in their fight against hostility, threats and attacks for many years. However, support measures have also included helping the aforementioned key players in formulating conclusive arguments to counter racist and right-wing populist statements and comments.
MBR consultations in these fields may focus on:
- Analysis and assessment of extreme right-wing and racist mobilisations against refugees and refugee accommodations in the various districts of Berlin.
- Advice for and qualification of staff, management and security personnel, in particular when new accommodation locations are opened or events are planned.
- Development of tailor-made action strategies in the case of incidents motivated by extreme right-wing, racist, anti-Semitic or right-wing populist sentiment.
